Okay for Now

I just finished this book today. The main character, Doug, is experiencing life as an 8th grade boy, during one of the most memorable years in history. 1968. The Vietnam war was raging on, Apollo space missions were being explored & best of all, baseball player, Joe Pepitone is slugging his way into Doug’s life. Doug’s life is far from perfect. His father is hardly around and neglects his mother, his brothers, and him. When his father loses his job, the he forces Doug and his family out of Long Island and into Marysville, New York. Never heard of it? Well neither has Doug. When his family gets settled into their new house, which Doug then names “The Dump” due to its poor condition, he decides to explore a bit. Doug didn’t believe that his luck couldn’t have gotten any worse, being stuck in stupid old Marysville. His luck takes a turn for the better when he meets Lil. A smart, witty gal just bursting with spunk! Doug is intrigued by her. But Lil, on the other hand, is playing hard to get. He follows her into the library after a snide remark from her about never being in a library before. All though it was true, he wanted to show her that he knew libraries just as well as she. They began running into each other outside the library. They begin to chat. He is surprised when she offers him a job as a delivery boy at her father’s store. “A job?” I said. “Yes. A job for a skinny thug.” He meets many new faces of Marysville during his route. He becomes “Skinny Delivery Boy”. His journeys in Marysville allow him to meet many new faces, fall in love, and learn how to cope with a dead beat dad. I really enjoyed this book because there were many stories in one here. I thought it was a great read. I enjoy period books, so this was right up my ally. The author, Gary D. Schmidt, also wrote The Wednesday Wars, which I enjoyed as well. There were kinda a few plots in one here. I liked that aspect. All though I wished that in the end the author did a better job of wrapping up one of the plots. But all in all a great read.

What is my Favorite thing to do?

I love to do a lot! I love reading, theatre, singing, dancing like no one is watching, painting, doing math, running track, using words that people don’t know, and make people laugh so hard that they keel over.

Why Haven’t I Been Posting?

Well because I have been super busy with school and stuff. We just weren’t able to take the time to say interesting things. Plus we haven’t been reading any really great books lately.

BIG NEWS!

News #1- It is the 1 year anniversary of Makenna and Senna’s Book Blog! We created it a year ago and we are so happy that people have been viewing it! Please tell your friends! We will be posting a lot during the 1 year anniversary month! We will be celebrating a ton! Thank you for being such awesome fans!

News #2- Makenna got into a little Segway accident and broke her collar-bone. She had surgery last Tuesday and she should be one the mend but she wont be able to type so she can’t blog. Hopefully we will hear from her during the 1 year anniversary but no guaranties.

This site is a fun site that allows you to create your own animations for free. I have been having fun messing around with this site lately and I’m kinda addicted!

Site 2- www.khanacademy.org

This may not be as cool as the Go Animate site but you like I said I’ve been addicted. This site allows you to practice and refine your math skills. You get points and badges. It kinda makes you a little competitive. My math class is required to have one and be practicing. We have been competing against one another to get the most points.

An Abundance of Katherines by John Green

I resently read this book and just had to post about it! But I know your thinking “Okay Senna so why is this the best book you’ve ever read?” But this book isn’t the best book I’ve ever read. It didn’t even make my top 50. But this book is a very different kind of romance novel. It has a light plot with a predictable conclusion. But that isn’t why this book is blog worthy. Hold your horses I’m getting to the point. This book has a wide array of characters. Its main character, Colin Singleton, is a teenage brainiac. He is a supposed genius. The odd thing about this book is that Colin has only dated girls named Katherine. Not Catherines, Kathys, and not Kats. Nothing but Katherines. He has dated 19 Katherines. Every single one has dumped him. So then this boy genius is so obsessed with the theory of only dating Katherines, that he creates a theorem that predicts when the Katherines will/have dump him. Katherine 19 just dumped him. He really loved this one. Colin’s best friend, Hassan, tries to cheer him up after K19′s dumping. They go on a road trip in pursuit to cheer Colin up. Along the way they run into some unexpected people and make a bizarre stop in Gutshot, Tennessee to see the grave of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. He meets a beautiful country bumpkin, Lindsay Lee Wells, on the adventure. Little did Colin and Hassan know that they would make their final stop in Gutshot. Will Colin finish the theorem? Could there be a Katherine 20? What do they do in Gutshot? Find out in An Abundance of Katherines.

What’s Senna Reading?

Currently I am reading a book titled Orchards by Holly Thompson. It deals with teen suicide. But this book is also very cultural. I am learning many new things about rural Japan. I don’t recommend this book because I’m not enjoying it. The main character, Kana, continuously blames the girl who committed suicide, Ruth, for everything that is wrong in her life. I don’t think it would bother me so much if they actually told you what happened and why Ruth committed suicide. I’m on page 100 something and I haven’t even gotten a clue about what happened to Ruth. Plus the book is written in prose. I’m not a big fan of this writing style. It seems like she is writing it like a journal of Kana but who writes their diary in prose? There hasn’t been a single period in the entire book. Quite frankly this book is just getting on my nerves.

The Luxe

The Luxe is a great teen book series that I am reading right now. I have finished the first one and am now working on the second one. It is placed in the end of the 1800′s and in the Spanish American War time. It is about the upper class of the time period. It is about forbidden love and gold digging. Wealth at the time was very important. The main character’s name is Elisabeth. She is forced by her mother to marry a man that she isn’t in love with. She is madly in love with the stable man named Will. She wants to be with him more than anything in the world. She doesn’t want to marry the man she is engaged to. The rich man named Henry to whom she must marry is also in love with someone else. The books are so different from most teen books. You feel like you are part of the book because it is so detailed. I love the books. It is for sure one of the best teen series there are. It is a 10/10!

Evermore

Evermore is a teen fiction book series about immortality. It is a series with five books, soon to be six. The books are basically another teen romance super natural. On the other hand, I do recommend the books. They are different than the normal vampire love fest. But I must give all our fellow readers a warning from me and Makenna, you must be a very pacient person to read the series (Makenna and I are not). The main character, named Ever, will drive you nuts. I think she wins the Bookie Award fo the most stupid main character. Makenna and I are convinced that her skull is empty. Now you are probably sitting behind that computer wondering “if she hates it so much then why is she reading the series?” Well reader I will explain, Makenna and I our very tolerant people. As long as we can argue about the book together then it makes it a lot less terrible. Plus I think Makenna and I hope that over time she might learn and get smarter. But the problem is that she never learns or gets smarter. She remains the stupid person that she was at the beginning of the book. So don’t get your hopes up! The series gets a 6/10.

The Carrie Diaries

The Carrie Diaries is one of the WORST books i’ve read in a long time! It was an autobiography of the author Candace Bushnell. The book was just dissapointing in general. The focus of the book was straying away from the topic; Candece Bushnell. The book was more about teen relationships than about the author herself. I thought that it was going to focus more on how she got into the writing buisness than about her fuddy duddy boyfriends. The book was defenatly more for 16 and up than for me Senna, a 12 year old girl. Carrie Diaries was kinda cheesey. She wasn’t the smartest teenage girl in my oppinon. I wouldn’t give the book to my friends to read because it was just that bad. Plus Makenna is like my only friend who reads!

Cool Videos/Help

Ok so you all know that we post about books! Well today I felt the need to post about some youtube videos. Four days ago in the paper I read an article about local Bend kids making youtube videos. Most of us has heard of Dude Perfect and for all you people who don’t know what that is, they are totally amazing b-ball shots! Well the boys did a their own version called Kid Perfect! I just watched them and they are so much more amazing and so original! Their username is jonesbros150! Sorry people! I couldn’t think of anything to post book wise! Makenna and I are having a major block! Help!
